Boating
There are many opportunities for Boating in Sundance ranging from canoeing and kayaking, to white water rafting, wind surfing, tubing, paddle boating and row boating.
Canoeing Canoeing presents ample opportunities to see nature up-close, from suddenly coming across a moose grazing on lily pads, or a great blue heron spreading three-foot wings. Most Sundance canoeing trips are suitable for all experience levels, and we offer both day trips and longer week-long trips. Even if you’ve never set foot in a canoe before, you'll feel at home on a Sundance outing. For example, if you’re a beginner, we’ll pair you with someone experienced. We always rent as many canoes as we need and on longer trips all the equipment is usually provided by an outfitter. The places Sundance most frequently visits for canoe trips include the placid streams of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, the Delaware River, the Farmington River, as well as the tidal rivers flowing into Long Island Sound on eastern Long Island—and all within a two-hour radius of Manhattan! In the past Sundance has also sponsored canoe trips to the Adirondacks, Maine, the Gaulley River in West Virginia, and Algonquin Park, in Ontario, Canada.
White-Water Rafting We have done numerous trips on both the Lehigh and Delaware Rivers. White water rafting on the Lehigh needs to be done over a weekend because of the distance from NYC and we have stayed at the Woods Campground in Pennsylvania. The Lehigh is especially exciting after a dam release. The Delaware River has calmer waters for more relaxed, yet thoroughly enjoyable trips, and can be done in a single day from NYC.
Tubing on the Delaware We usually do a tubing outing down the Delaware River in midsummer. 30 to 40 Sundancers join ranks with people from other GLBT groups to “take over” the Delaware River for a day. We often head over to New Hope, PA for a communal dinner and or a drink, after this event.
Pedal boating and Row boating These are easy first time boating trips available at Prospect Park and Central Park, respectively, which can be combined with a metro event.
Kayaking We usually do a trip in the Peconic Bay on Long Island around the end of July. This beautiful trip is ideal for first time sea kayakers, since the Peconic Bay is sheltered on all sides. We have also rented kayaks for an experience on the Hudson River. There are numerous possibilities for more advanced kayaking trips, which can easily be accommodated.
