Biking
Biking is a great way to get exercise and see the sights. The Sundance Biking Team is active from early spring to late fall.
Biking activities range from training bike rides in Prospect and Central Parks to long summer days cycling through the hills of the Hudson River Valley to bike rides to Jones Beach for a swim in the ocean.
As with other Sundance activities, biking can be a day outing or a weekend or longer. A few years ago a band of stalwart Sundancers explored mainland China by bike.
Questions and Answers
Q: What is a typical Sundance bike ride? A: Most bike trips cover 20-40 miles over moderately hilly terrain. A few bike trips are longer and segments of certain bike outings may involve some steeper hills.
Q:What equipment do I need for a bike ride? A: For a Sundance bike trip you need a safety helmet, multi-speed touring bike, spare tube in case of a flat, and water bottle. Any special requirements for a particular bike ride will be listed in Crosswinds, Sundance's monthly newsletter.
Q:How are bike rides rated? A:Bike rides are rated beginner, intermediate or advanced depending on the length, terrain and the pace of the bike ride. Most Sundance bike rides are considered intermediate. Most physically fit people can readily complete a Sundance intermediate bike ride.
Q:How many people go on a bike ride? A: The number of participants on a bike ride can vary from 6 to 20 but most bike rides have between 10 and 15 people on them.
Q:How can I find out more information about a bike ride? A: Sundance publishes a monthly newsletter, Crosswinds, which lists upcoming outings. Each outing has two co-leaders. Call the outing leaders for more information about a particular bike ride or the Biking Team captains for more general information about biking.
