    OLD CROTON AQUEDUCT HIKE-pv

    Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:30 AM

Finished in 1842, the Old Croton Aqueduct ran 33 miles from the Croton River to a reservoir on what is now Central Park’s Great Lawn, providing New York with its first source of clean, dependable water.

An engineering marvel in its day, the Aqueduct was taken out of service in 1955 and now serves as a 23 mile trail from the Bronx to the New Croton Reservoir in northern Westchester County. We’ll hike the southern portion of the trail, now a National Historic Landmark, from Tarrytown to Yonkers, passing striking examples of 19th century American architecture, in particular Andrew Jackson Davis’s Gothic Revival mansion, Lyndhurst, several parks, and the original Overseer’s House.

For much of the trail there will be sweeping views of the Hudson. We’ll end at the Glenwood Metro North train station, though some may want to explore the nearby Hudson River Museum before returning home.

The trail is absolutely level. Those unprepared to hike 10 miles can always leave early since the route passes by several Metro North stations.
