| ALASKA'S DENALI NATIONAL PARK. |
Sat Jun 26, 2010 7:15 AM - Sat Jul 3, 2010 8:00 AM
Description: Designated in 1917, Denali National Park in Alaska contains the tallest peak in North America and an abundance of wildlife. We start our adventure in Anchorage and take the Denali Star Train which will bring us directly to the entrance of the park. On the approximately 7½ hour ride, we will Gold Star service which includes confirmed seating in an upper-level dome car providing views of the spectacular Alaskan scenery. Upon arriving in Denali, we will camp in the main entrance complex near showers and a restaurant.
The next morning we will board the shuttle bus (the only way to access the interior of the park) and begin our tour. We will stop in several locations along the park road where we will set up camp and hike out into the tundra. Hopefully the clouds will clear long enough to catch a glimpse of massive peak of Mount McKinley. The shuttle bus runs frequently and we will board it again to take us to different locations. We will spend four nights camping in the back country. There will are no amenities except pit toilets at some camp sites. On our final night we will return to the entrance complex where we will again be in the developed campground with showers and a nearby restaurant. The following afternoon we board the train for our return to Anchorage. While trip is intermediate in terms of activity level, it will require setting up camp in backcountry locations and carrying everything your bring. Bear and other wildlife are prevalent and we will not have access to our own vehicle. We need to set up camp at least at 1/2 mile from road, so backpacks are required for ease of mobility. We will also need to carry in food for five days which must be stored in bear-proof containers. Once participants are set we will determine how to handle meals. Water must be filtered or purified. A more detailed itinerary, including a full list of things to bring and more exact meeting location will be sent to participants closer to departure date.
